Making your inbox work for you

Love it or hate it, email is here to stay. For most of us, technology such as emails has crept into our lives, but very few of us have actually received any training on how to use it.  Ever spent 20 minutes searching your inbox for an email you know is in there somewhere?

If your email inbox is anything like the old shoebox where receipts used to get thrown before tax time, you’re not alone. With emails coming from accountants, banks and suppliers, it can be surprisingly easy for important information to disappear into a crowded inbox.

One simple way to make things easier to find is to use labels or folders. Think of labels or folders like putting a tab on a folder in your filing cabinet. You could have labels for things like:

  • Accountant
  • Banking
  • Government
  • Grants and funding
  • Suppliers
  • Insurance

You don’t need to organise every email you’ve ever received, start small. Think about the emails you regularly have to go looking for. For example:

  • “Where was that email from the bank about the loan?” → Banking
  • “When did we receive that grant approval?” → Grants and funding
  • “What was the insurance renewal quote?” → Insurance
  • “What did the accountant ask me to send through?” → Accountant

It’s simple, but a small amount of organisation now can save a lot of searching later.

Easier said than done, I hear you say. Technology can be your friend and I’m going to suggest that you use YouTube for a how-to tutorial or visit these links for some of the most popular operating systems:
